While Shepherds Watched!

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

While Shepherds Watched!

While Shepherds Watched has to be the most abused Christmas Carol. From young children to university students the words have been replaced to suit the mood.

The music for While Shepherds Watched comes from “Siroe,” an opera by George Frederick Handel. The Poet Laureate in the reign of Queen Anne, Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady paraphrased the psalms for singing in rhyme. In 1703 While Shepherds Watched was the result of their method.

While Shepherds Watched – Lyrics and Verses

While shepherds watched
Their flocks by night
All seated on the ground
The angel of the Lord came down
And glory shone around
And glory shone around

“Fear not,” he said,
For mighty dread
Had seized their troubled minds
“Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind,
To you and all mankind.”

“To you in David’s
Town this day
Is born of David’s line
The Savior who is Christ the Lord
And this shall be the sign
And this shall be the sign.”

“The heavenly Babe
You there shall find
To human view displayed
And meanly wrapped
In swathing bands
And in a manger laid
And in a manger laid.”

Thus spake the seraph,
And forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song
Addressed their joyful song

“All glory be to
God on high
And to the earth be peace;
Goodwill henceforth
From heaven to men
Begin and never cease
Begin and never cease!”

We Three Kings of Orient Are

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

We Three Kings of Orient Are

The We Three Kings of Orient Are Christmas Carol is the epitome of the Christmas pageant. To be one of the Kings was always a coveted role.

Written in 1857 by Rev. John Henry Hopkins, We Three Kings of Orient Are is one of the most famous American carols. It was written to be part of the General Theological Seminary in New York City Christmas pageant.

We Three Kings of Orient Are – Lyrics and Verses

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy Perfect Light

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to rein

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Pray’r and praising, all men raising
Worship Him, God most high

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes of life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Earth to heav’n replies

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Silent Night!

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

Silent Night!

AS Silent Night is the most famous Christmas carol of all time; it is no wonder that next to Away in a Manager it is one of the first Christmas carols that we learn as youngesters.

It is interesting that the origins of Silent Night are a result of an unfortunate event. In 1818 the organ of St Nicholas Church located in Obernoff broke. Joseph Mohr, an Austrian Priest had writen silent Night as a poem in 1816. He gave this to his friend Franz Xavier Gruber who composed the music for guitar. It thenwas played for the midnight mass.

Silent Night -Lyrics and Verses

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth “

O Little Town of Bethlehem !

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

O Little Town of Bethlehem !

This carol is always part of the Christmas pageant. It definitely brings memories of shepherds, Joseph, Mary and the Angels all trying to remember their parts and trying not to trip on their robes.

Originating in America O Little Town of Bethlehem was written in 1868 by Rector Phillips Brooks. He was helped by Lewis Redner, church organist who composed the music. It has been a mainstay of Sunday school children’s choirs since that time.

O Little Town of Bethlehem – Lyrics and Verses

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight

For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven.
No ear may his His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel

O Christmas Tree!

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

O Christmas Tree!

The children love this Christmas carol and sing with gusto.

A German carol there is very little known about either the lyrics or music of O Christmas Tree.

O Christmas Tree -Lyrics and Verses

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
Not only green when summer’s here,
But also when ’tis cold and drear.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can’st give me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can’st give me;
How often has the Christmas tree
Afforded me the greatest glee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can’st give me.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
From base to summit, gay and bright,
There’s only splendor for the sight.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
Thou bidst us true and faithful be,
And trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!

Joy to the World!

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

Joy to the World

My son once had a girl friend named Joyce. She felt this was her Christmas song and so even though she is no longer a part of our family circle when we sing this we always remember her.

Joy to the World goes back to 1719 when Isaac Watts wrote it. He went on to write many hymns and carols. George Frederick Handel composed the music for this carol.

Joy to the World -Lyrics and Verses

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear!

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear!

When I was much younger the choir at the church I attended always sang this as part of the Christmas service. I think it really needs all the voices to do it justice.

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear was originally a poem written by a Massachusetts minister, Edmund Hamilton Sears in 1849. Then in 1859 Richard Storrs Willis composed the music.

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear – Verses and Lyrics

It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, goodwill to men
From heavens all gracious King!”
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled;
And still their heavenly music floats
O’er all the weary world:
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing,
And ever o’er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.

O ye beneath life’s crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow;
Look now, for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
Oh rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing.

For lo! the days are hastening on,
By prophets seen of old,
When with the ever-circling years
Shall come the time foretold,
When the new heaven and earth shall own
The Prince of Peace, their King,
And the whole world send back the song
Which now the angels sing.

The First Noel !

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

The First Noel !

My memories of the The First Noel are of verses being sung interspersed with readings of the Christmas story and enacting of the Christmas pageant.

Dating back to the sixteenth century The First Noel was first published in 1883. Although there is nothing known about either the author or composer it is thought to be of English origins. Early printed versions of this carol use the English Nowell spelling.

The First Noel – Lyrics and Verses

The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star
Three Wise men came from country far
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the northwest
O’er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both Pause and stay
Right o’er the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those Wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in His presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with his blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

I Saw Three Ships!

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

I Saw Three Ships!

This is one of my favorites. I think it reflects a joy of the Christmas season that many of the more traditional carols do not. As many of the carols have been sung over the years in the serious sombre atmosphere of the church this one announces a joyful event.

Although thought to be an English carol from the Victorian era the origins, author of the lyrics and composer of the music of I Saw Three Ships are unknown.

I saw three ships! Verses and Lyrics

I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?

The Virgin Mary and Christ were there,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
The Virgin Mary and Christ were there,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?

O they sailed into Bethlehem,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
O they sailed into Bethlehem,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the bells on earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the bells on earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the Angels in Heaven shall sing,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the Angels in Heaven shall sing,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the souls on earth shall sing,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the souls on earth shall sing,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

Then let us all rejoice again,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
Then let us all rejoice again,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing!

IMAGE-ALT-TEXT

Hark the Herald Angels Sing!

Doesn’t this carol just bring to mind lovely small children trying to keep their wings straight during the Christmas pageant?

“Hark the Herald Angels Sing” Christmas Carol originally written by Charles Wesley in 1739. Charles was the brother of John Wesley founder of the Methodist church. The original music for his lyrics was slow and sombre. Thankfully a hundred years later Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) composed a cantata in 1840 to commemorate Johann Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press. English musician William H. Cummings adapted Mendelssohn’s music to fit the lyrics of “Hark the herald angels sing” already written by Wesley.

Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem”
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”
