Deck the Halls!

Deck the Halls!

In our house we should really begin to sing this at the beginning of December. We have a traditional home that we love to adorn with the many Christmas decorations we have gathered over the years. I am delighted that my four year old granddaughter is very interested in this activity.

Deck the Halls is attributed to the Welsh. It is thought that the tune comes from “Nos Galan” dating back to the sixteenth century. Apparently Mozart used the tune to Deck the Halls for a violin and piano duet. The lyrics were first published in 1881 in the Franklin Square Song Collection. Some time later J.P. McCaskey edited them and often is credited with being the author. However the author is unknown but the words are said to originate in America.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Don we now our gay apparel,

Fa la la, la la la, la la la.

Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Strike the harp and join the chorus.

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

While I tell of Yule tide treasure,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Sing we joyous, all together,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Heedless of the wind and weather,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.
