Parent Review of the Leapfrog LeapPad2
Have you seen the Leapfrog LeapPad2? Until this past month, I hadn’t either. While my daughter’s birthday is during the summer, we had some presents left over from her birthday. I know, she is one spoiled little girl by having such a large family! We have a tradition in our family that you can only open gifts from the party on your birthday. Every two to three weeks after, you can open a gift from a relative that couldn’t attend the party. This keeps the kids from being too spoiled and lets them enjoy their birthday months after the party. Her last large present to open was actually from my brother-in-law, and it was a very large package!
So, what did she get from her uncle? A Leapster 2 and a Leapfrog LeapPad2! When I first saw this Leap Frog toy, I was absolutely stunned. I didn’t even know there was a tablet for kids on the market. Until I had seen this, I had always let the girls borrow my iPad, which has sometimes been an absolute disaster. Now, I am excited since the Leapfrog LeapPad2 may be my chance to claim my iPad! Sorry far, I am very impressed with this toy. Here is what we think so far of this innovative kids tablet.
Leapfrog LeapPad2: Set Up
If you have every bought a Leap Frog product, you know that setting up their toys can take a bit of time. For starters, you need to have a Leapfrog Learning Paths account and then have to wait for the software to update. This takes anywhere from twenty to thirty minutes. If you have a child who is anxiously waiting for a toy, this can be an eternity. I highly recommend putting batteries (it needs 4 AAs) in the toy and updating it. If you want to forgo the expense of batteries, you can also buy a recharger pack. While it may seem odd opening a gift before your kids see it, you will thank yourself later for it! I made this mistake with my first Leap Frog product and had to listen to my oldest daughter when she was a toddler whine and temper tantrum for her Christmas gift.
As a parent, I also love the Leapfrog Learning Path. This part of their website allows you to get extra content, games, and monitor your children’s learning. I am able to see each of my daughters profiles and see where they excel, as well as need work. I love this since it tells me which type of games I need to focus on for the girls. I have found that this is especially good with reading, math, and science games. Getting the account set up for all of your kids is really the hardest part of using the Leapfrog LeapPad2, which I consider a major plus for this toy!
Leapfrog LeapPad2: Tablet Features
I have to say that I am very impressed just how much the Leapfrog LeapPad2 imitates my iPad. Like my tablet, it has a rear and back facing camera that can not only take pictures, but video. Unlike one of the other tablets on the market, it also has a complete touch screen. This is great in my opinion since it lets kids be a bit more interactive with their games. So far, all the games I have seen the kids play require them to tilt, shake, and even turn the Leapfrog LeapPad2. As well, it is has 4 gigs of memory to store information and a very fast processor, allowing the tablet to keep up with my daughters attention span. Watching kids light up when they play with this tablet is really a delight!
Leapfrog LeapPad2: Games
When I first looked at the literature for the Leapfrog LeapPad2, I was overwhelmed with the fact that it has over 325 applications. These applications range from games, videos, music, creativity applicatins, and ebooks. This really gives parents a lot of options across all subjects areas. I especially love that I can download games that focus on language arts, reading, art, music, culture, science, geography, health, and math.
My favorite applications, however, are the Learn to Read and Ultra Ebooks. These applications work with reading, phonics, and vocabulary. Like most Leap Frog cartridges and games, these comes to about $15 – $25 a cartridge. I usually get my games on Amazon since I can buy them much cheaper than any store near me.

Leapfrog LeapPad2: What Others Think
I have to tell you, I have fallen in love with the Leapfrog LeapPad2. It is a fun, innovative tablet that has absolutely captivated both of my girls! I don’t see them getting bored with this tablet anytime soon, making it one of my favorite learning toys. Currently, the Leapfrog LeapPad2 has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on Amazon.com. Here is what others saying about this tablets:
” i purchased the leappad 2 for my children for a 6 hour airplane ride. I also purchased the carrying case and the ac adapter. i have already purchased a rechargeable duracell battery system from costco so i brought that along as well. the leappad did exactly what i had hoped it would do. it is packed full of excellent apps, the art app and the pet pad keep the kids totally entertained. for our free app i downloaded rollie polly picnic and it’s very cool. i really didn’t want to be stuck with crazy kids on the airplane so i purchased some additional apps, honestly, i didn’t really need to. after reading many reviews i purchased stretchy monkey because it is kindof like angry birds but educational and not angry, i also puchased mr. pencil saves doodleburg. from what i can tell, mr. pencil is the biggest hit but they play both. i also purchased two videos because i thought my almost 3 year old would like them but he’s not really into screens at all. i purchased one e-book, the cinderella one (even though i have boys!) and they love it! the e-books are quite pricey, i felt like a bit of a fool buying it because really i should just be reading to them on the plane, but that being said i was blown away by the video quality of the book. it is also incredibly interactive… very very interesting. the whole system is very high quality, durable, the video quality is amazing. i’m so glad that i purchased this over an adult tablet or even the innotab. i’ve had luck with leapfrog products before, and this one certainly exceeded my expecations. i mean, if i bought my kids an adult tablet i would be concerned about them dropping it, scratching it, breaking it. the leappad is made to withstand tough kid treatment and i don’t want to have to micro-manage them… kids drop things and it would be sad if a young child felt rotten and guilty for breaking an ipad or any other adult tablet. this leappad is theirs, they treat it well, it is designed to be used by young children.
i am an outdoorsy hands-on mom and i set limits to screen time. i’m not big on electronics but this item certainly has a time and place and my kids are learning when they are playing. i couldn’t be more pleased.”
” My wife was setting this up on her computer when my 4 year old daughter caught her doing it. From that point on, my daughter and 7 year old son have been using this thing from sun up to sunset both arguing who gets it next. They love the games that it come with it as well as the add-on games you can get via download. So far, it seems very educational, and after a week of play, very fun. This is the first time in the history of toys that my kids haven’t been bored within the first few hours of having something. Suffice it to say, we all love the LeapPad2 just not the fighting.”
” I bought this product for my 4 year old. We have had it for two weeks. Well worth the money spent. I have four children and they all want to play with it. Since I have bought it he has not put it down and he has learned his colors, shapes, letters and more. You can download apps just as you would on an Android or Tablet. Some parents maybe skeptical of paying that much for a device that age, I was at first, but it is the best thing as far as for learning I have bought yet. Very durable and easy to set up and use. You can track your child’s learning by connecting it to your computer. If you have more than one child you can also track their skills as well. That is a great feature. It has a camera for fun play and drawing activities as well. I highly recommend this product to anyone.”
Where to Purchase the Leapfrog LeapPad2
While I didn’t purchase the Leapfrog LeapPad2, I saw from the packaging slip that it came from Amazon. Everyone in my family prefers buying from Amazon since they have a great return policy, free shipping, and of course, amazing prices! It is so much cheaper to buy toys on Amazon, especially when you compare their prices to big box retailers and specialty stores. They also have the Leapfrog LeapPad2 available in two colors – green and pink. I had never seen the pink one in stores, making it a fun and unique Christmas gift for little girls! If you are planning on buying one of these kids tablets for Christmas, I highly recommend purchasing it from Amazon!
