Our Favorite Christmas Carols

Our Favorite Christmas Carols

My husband’s father had perfect pitch. He was able to pick up almost any instrument and play it immediately. As a result there was always a great deal of music in our household while he was alive.

The singing of Christmas Carols on Christmas eve was a tradition that I think started when my husband was a wee boy. It certainly has always been part of our Christmas tradition. The following carols are always a must.

Away in a Manger!

Away in a Manager must be always the first carol that children are taught. I know it certainly was in both the school and the church Sunday scholl that I attended. Thought to be published in 1885 in a Lutheran Sunday school book, a misconception that the lyrics of Away in a Manger were actually written by Martin Luther himself was developed. The author is actually unknown. The music to Away in a Manger was composed by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895.

Away in a Manger -Lyrics and Verses

Away in a manger,
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes

I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side,
‘Til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray

Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there
