Evergreen Toys 2014 for Baby and Preschool Children

Every year at Top Ten Christmas Ideas we review the new hot toys for Christmas, however as a grandparent I feel that there is much more satisfaction in giving toys that will last and grow with the child. With this in mind we would like to recommend the following evergreen toys for 2014. We have the experience of having seven grandchildren who have all used the following toys.

Evergreen Toys for Baby

Fisher-Price Cradle ‘N Swing

Fisher-Price Cradle 'N Swing
One of the best items that we have is the Fisher-Price Cradle ‘N Swing. As one of my daughter’s friends said this Fisher-Price Cradle ‘N Swing allows you to have shower. When my twin granddaughters were born I don’t think that we could have managed without two of these. They swing back and forth as well as sideways. Over head is a mobile with colorful toys to catch baby’s eye. The music on these swings can be moderated from a very soft to slightly louder sound. It comes in several models. If you are expecting a new child we highly recommend the Fisher-Price Cradle ‘N Swing.

Activity Gym

Skip Hop Treetop Friends Activity Gym
An Activity Gym is a blanket that has activities mounted on arms above the mat. The baby can lie on his or her back reaching or kicking the objects. This gives Mom a safe place to put baby for a change activity. It is lying on one of these activity gyms that many babies will take their first roll over move. There are a number from which to choose. In our family we have had the Skip Hop Treetop Friends Activity Gym, however they are all great. Have a look at the various choices of Activity Gyms.

Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Learning Home

Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Learning Home
Another toy that will last for some time is the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Learning Home. This is a freestanding door surrounded with activities. It is great for a baby who is crawling. They can push the door and crawl through to the other side. The door makes a noise when opened. It is lasting because of the activities associated with it. There is a doorbell, a mailbox, and a shapes place on the door, a radio, a clock, and balls that can be put in a chute. If this is used with parental interaction many common day activities can be taught. The Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Learning Home will give hours of fun and learning.

Preschool Evergreen Toys

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe
If you have followed any of our blogs you will know the all time recommendation we have is for a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe. We have had seven of these in the family and they have all been worth every penny spent. The first one that we acquire was a second hand one that I picked up for $20.00. We just passed it on when my eldest grandson was ten. Because you can push a small child in it as they pretend to drive, it is appropriate for a two year old. We are now trying to wrestle two of these cozy coupes from our granddaughters age five. They can still drive them and do, even though they now ride two wheel bikes. I cannot think of any toy that has had more use and joy than these Little Tikes Cozy Coupes.

Radio Flyer Wagon

Radio Flyer Wagon
The Radio Flyer wagon is another excellent evergreen toy. We have owned at least three of these and they have been well used. The manufacturer has a recommended age of one plus. Personally I think maybe the child should be a bit older. You definitely want a child who can sit up before putting them in the wagon unless you intend to have them lying down. The seats have seat belts but they are not three point harnesses. Our Radio Flyer wagons have been used for everything from pulling children from one place to another, to taking items to the beach, and to being a float in a parade. They are well made, sturdy plastic, wheels that swivel, and comfortable handle. We advise getting the one with the canopy especially if you live in a Sunbelt. We still use our Radio Flyer wagon.

Plasma Car

Original PlasmaCar by PlaSmart
My daughter introduced the plasma car into the family. I think she just wanted one for herself. Small children can ride with an adult behind them. It is not long before they are able to maneuver the car themselves. We have watched the children go from running the car by using their feet on the ground to learning that it can be put in motion just by steering. Again this has be an extremely popular toy in our family. Although we have had at least three of them, I think we could do with another to keep the twins happy. Because it last from toddler to older child the plasma cars are truly great evergreen toys.

Razor Scooters

Razor A3 Kick Scooters
There is Razor scooter suitable for almost any age. For our preschoolers we started with a three-wheel scooter. It was interesting to watch the children go from “I can’t do this” to “look at me”. The scooters teach them balance and safety. For our children it was mandatory that they wear helmets. This set them up to understand that they would need helmets to bike and to ski. These three wheel Razor scooters come in several colors. Ours were well used and in such good shape that they were easy to pass on when newer Razor scooters were purchased.

Step2 LifeStyle Custom Kitchen

Step2 LifeStyle Custom Kitchen
This Step2 LifeStyle Custom Kitchen is suitable for both boys and girls although our experience has been with girls. Santa delivered this to my eldest granddaughter when she was three. However her twin sisters started taking an interest in it once they could stand. One of the lovely features about the Lifestyle Dream Kitchen is that it does not take up a lot of room. Children delight in the sizzling frying pan and the boiling pot. The Step2 LifeStyle Custom Kitchen will have your child serving you delicious imaginative creations for a long time.

Radio Flyer Classic Dual Deck Tricycle

Radio Flyer Classic Dual Deck Tricycle
We have owned two Radio Flyer Classic Dual Deck Tricycles. They were both pink for our twin granddaughters, but this wonderful tricycle also comes in red. One of the features that the girls have loved is the dual deck. Many times one would pedal while the other rode on the back of the same trike. The girls received theirs when they were three and now at age five they are reluctantly moving on to two wheelers and giving up these great Radio Flyer Classic Dual Deck Tricycles.
As time goes on we may add items to this page. In the meantime we urge you to visit and look for toys that will last more than just a few months.
